The Capacity–Pathway Framework

What your body may be capable of is not the same as what it has discovered.

The Capacity–Pathway Framework separates what may be possible from what becomes accessible, discovered, recruited, experienced, expressed, and patterned.

It gives Neurosexology a way to investigate the distance between bodily possibility and the experiences, behaviors, reports, and identities that become visible in a person’s life.

The distinction that began the framework

Capacity is not the same thing as discovered capacity.

Capacity

What may be possible for an organism under some set of conditions.

Discovered capacity

A possibility the person has actually encountered, recognized, or learned to identify.

A capacity may be present without having been noticed. It may be difficult to access under current conditions, available only through an unfamiliar pathway, inhibited, inconsistently expressed, or genuinely absent. The framework does not decide among those explanations in advance.

The distribution of discovered capacities under a particular culture may not be the distribution of human capacities themselves.

What has been observed

  • What happened in one event under particular conditions.
  • Through the pathways that were accessible and recruited.
  • With the language and expectations available.
  • In forms that became experienced, expressed, measured, or reported.

What may be possible

  • May extend beyond one event or current conditions.
  • May involve unfamiliar pathways.
  • May be difficult, unstable, or context-dependent.
  • May differ genuinely across people.
  • Must remain an empirical question rather than a promise.

What living system is being studied?

Organism

The living embodied system under investigation, studied as embedded in relational, cultural, linguistic, medical, and environmental conditions.

A measurement of one component is not automatically a measurement of the whole organism.

Through what route may the capacity become available or participate?

Pathway

A route or organized process through which a capacity can become available or participate in experience.

Pathway ≠ one nerve, one body part, or pathway accessibility.

Has the person encountered or recognized the capacity or pathway?

Discovery

The process through which a person encounters, recognizes, or becomes able to identify a capacity or pathway.

Discovery ≠ accessibility and discovery ≠ recruitment.

What is participating in this event?

Recruitment

The incorporation of a body region, signal, sensation, pathway, physiological process, attentional resource, memory, relational element, meaning, or other component into the active event.

Biological activity ≠ recruitment into a particular state.

How are the recruited components organized together?

Configuration

The particular arrangement, weighting, timing, interaction, and organization of recruited components within an event.

Recruitment ≠ configuration.

What becomes observable, communicable, or reportable?

Expression

The ways an event becomes physiologically, behaviorally, communicatively, relationally, or otherwise observable.

Experience ≠ expression and expression ≠ capacity.

What is changing the system?

Conditions

The circumstances and variables that alter capacity estimates, pathway accessibility, discovery, recruitment, configuration, state, experience, expression, or pattern.

Conditions do not sit at one stage; they surround and enter the whole system.

How does what happens now change what may happen next?

Feedback

The process through which one moment or event changes the conditions or organization of later moments and events.

Outcome ≠ endpoint.

Not a stage model

The framework describes a recursive system, not a fixed sequence.

What happens in one moment can change the next: sensation changes attention; attention changes perceived sensation; state changes what is accessible; expression changes what a partner does; aftermath changes a later event; repeated events become patterns; and patterns return as conditions.

A public way into the framework

The trip taken is not the entire city.

The city metaphor preserves the difference between what exists, what is reachable, what is known, what is used, and what happens during one journey.

The organism is not a car carrying a separate self through the city. The metaphor describes a living system—not a detached driver operating a body-vehicle.

What the framework changes

A body part does not have to be permanently sexual to participate in sexual experience.

Feet remain feet. Nipples remain nipples. A penis participates in urination as well as sexual experience. Skin participates in protection, temperature regulation, pain, comfort, affection, and pleasure.

A body region becomes part of sexual experience when its activity is recruited into a sexual configuration of the organism. The anatomy remains the same. The active organization changes.

Sexual can describe a mode of recruitment rather than a permanent property of anatomy.

The body as a whole is a primary sex organ.

Technical translation: Sexual experience is an organism-level phenomenon. Conventionally designated sex organs are important participants, but they are not the entire system.

Nothing occurs without conditions

Conditions do not sit beside the framework. They shape the whole of it.

Conditions can alter whether a pathway is available, whether a possibility is noticed, what becomes recruited, how a configuration develops, what state emerges, how the event is experienced, what becomes expressed, and what happens later.

Biological and medical

Anatomy, health, hormones, medication, injury, disability, fatigue, age, pain, and physiological variation.

Developmental and learned

History, repetition, conditioning, education, skill, practice, prior experience, and adaptation.

Sensory and attentional

Touch, pressure, movement, intensity, timing, focus, distraction, and interoceptive awareness.

Affective and autonomic

Safety, stress, vigilance, excitement, calm, fear, overwhelm, and regulation.

Relational and interpersonal

Partner, trust, familiarity, power, communication, affection, perceived desire, and responsiveness.

Linguistic and cultural

Categories, anatomical labels, sexual scripts, moral rules, permission, expectation, and what a culture teaches people to notice.

Situational and environmental

Privacy, location, time, interruption, urgency, noise, temperature, and material surroundings.

Interpretive and personal

Meaning, intention, identity, expectation, goals, values, and self-understanding.

Naming can direct attention.

Researchers must ask whether they are observing the organism’s complete possibility space or a traffic pattern partly produced by the map people were given.

A more careful interpretation of absence

The same non-observation can have very different explanations.

If a capacity or response has not been observed, the framework does not immediately classify it as absent. It asks which possibility is supported.

    Accessible after learning or attentional development

    Made easier to notice or recruit through experience without assuming the capacity was created from nothing.

    Genuinely unavailable to the individual

    Not available despite appropriate conditions and investigation.

  9. 09

    Biologically absent

    The relevant substrate or capacity is not present.

Safeguards

A framework of possibility must not become a new performance standard.

There is no required map.Capacity is not a promise.Accessibility is not an obligation.Discovery is not a duty.Broader recruitment is not inherently healthier, more evolved, or more sexual.

What the framework does not claim

  • That every proposed capacity exists in every person.
  • That every inaccessible pathway can become accessible or be trained.
  • That a person should explore a pathway they do not want to explore.
  • That a narrow, genital-centered, or highly specific pattern is inferior.
  • That an unusual pathway is automatically healthy, safe, or desirable.
  • That lack of access is automatically dysfunction.
  • That capacity can be inferred from identity, behavior, or one event.
  • That the framework is a diagnosis, treatment protocol, or validated clinical instrument.

From vocabulary to investigation

The distinctions generate testable questions.

The framework is useful only if it improves description, explanation, comparison, and measurement. Its redescription value must remain distinct from validation or mechanistic proof.

Selected propositions

  1. The same expression may arise through different pathways and configurations.
  2. The same pathway or body region may participate in different states under different conditions.
  3. A pathway may be biologically available but undiscovered, discovered but inaccessible, accessible but unrecruited, or recruited without conscious recognition.
  4. Repeated recruitment may alter later accessibility without proving that the underlying capacity was newly created.
  5. A physiological expression may occur without a corresponding subjective sexual experience.
  6. Language and culture may alter which capacities are attended to, practiced, discovered, recruited, and reported.
  7. The observed distribution of expression may differ from the distribution of human capacity.
  8. A recurring person-level pattern does not, by itself, establish its origin.

Candidate research questions

  • Under which conditions does a body region become sexually recruited rather than remain neutral or serve another function?
  • How can accessibility be distinguished from underlying capacity?
  • Can discovery be identified as a specific event or gradual process?
  • How does repeated recruitment change later attention, expectation, and accessibility?
  • Which changes occur within an event, between events, and across development?
  • How do partner responses create recursive interpersonal loops?
  • How do different anatomical and cultural labels alter exploration and report?
  • Which measures capture experience, which capture expression, and where do they diverge?
